Khmer New Year - 2011

Note of Thanks

Dear all,

I would like to express my gratitude for another successful Khmer New Year 2011 Celebration. I am very touched and proud of your efforts and for sacrificing your time to travel from long distances to join us in making the day very special and truly memorable.

I am particularly indebted to those members who contributed to the religious ceremony, the food and catering, the music entertainment, the traditional dances, the popular comedy show, the photographers and the dedicated decorating team from the Cambodian Student Association.

The ceremony was opened with Khmer National Anthem and followed by National song Pung Savada Khmer, where all members and guests stood up and sang together.

We were honoured by the gracious participation of HE Ambassador Hor Nambora and family together with members of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia staff. A speech was delivered by the ambassador conveying his best wishes to all Cambodians, home and abroad.

Special guests took part this year: Tai Chi’s Martial Art’s children performance team from the VLC Centre, the Bollywood Dance Performance.

It would not have been such a wonderful event without your participation. This is especially appreciated in these times of economic difficulties, and it continues to ensure that the Khmer culture is kept alive and that the community stays focused and closely bonded.

I strongly hope that we as a community will continue to progress in this vein for the mutual benefit of all in the UK thereby ensuring a positive image of Cambodia internationally.

The Khmer New Year (Chaul Chhnam) celebration on Saturday 16th April 2011 was held at the VLC Centre. It was a great success again this year!

A large numbers of people turned up from the start to the end of the day. The Hall was bursting at the seams! We had raised 728.00GBP for Bang Skaul for donations to the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Sobopha Owen

The actual date for the Cambodian New Year is the 13th of April. By ancient tradition, the celebration would last for three days. The first day is the beginning of the celebration, the second is the Middle Day (Blind Date) and the third one is the Day when the name of the New Year i.e. year of the Rabbit effectively starts.
